About Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be defined as the stimulation of specific points on the body (acupoints) to
cause a desired healing effect. Insertion of small needles into these specific points, results in
therapeutic benefits. This technique has been used in veterinary practice for at least 3000 years
to treat many ailments and provide comfort. The American Veterinary Medical Association
considers veterinary acupuncture a valid treatment modality within the practice of veterinary
medicine and surgery. Used either by itself or in conjunction with western medicine, veterinary
acupuncture can assist the body to heal itself by affecting certain physiological changes.

Acupuncture works primarily through the central nervous system sending messages to the
musculoskeletal, hormonal and cardiovascular systems. Acupuncture increases circulation,
stimulates nerves, relieves muscle spasms, and causes the release of multiple neurochemicals
(i.e. endorphins – the body’s natural “pain-killers”). Depending on what condition is being
treated and which points are utilized, different body systems and mechanisms for healing
are stimulated.

Clinical trials indicate that acupuncture therapy can be effective in the treatment of Muscu-
loskeletal Problems, Neurologic Disorders, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Respiratory Disorders,
and Other Medical Problems. Acupuncture therapy has also been shown to enhance perfor-
mance and prevent disease.

Only licensed veterinarians are eligible to practice acupuncture in the state of California. A
certified acupuncture training course is highly recommended before performing veterinary
acupuncture. Look for a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).
